Rebecca Schwarz recalls her first encounter with this alternative approach at a wedding fair in 1998. As she breezed past rows of identical portraits in search of a photographer for her wedding, the work of San Franciscan Daniel Gohstand caught her eye. “Most wedding photographs are very posed, and his were not like that at all. They were beautiful, like artwork,” she recalls. Gohstand brings his experience as a travel documentarian with a degree in photojournalism to wedding photography. When he first began shooting nuptials in 1995, few photographers practiced this style, he recalls. Today, he says, the intimate, situational style is gaining popularity and practitioners. For Rebecca Schwarz, it was well worth the cost. “How could anybody not like these photos?” she asks. “They all have a really special human quality. You look at a picture and it is not just a mom and daughter – you can see their spirit through the picture.”
